@James, so this argument: "So, an university education isn’t really useful if you really want to learn how to do something useful." is based on 2 art classes you took, one at a university and one at a 2-year college? Seems like a large enough sample size to make that assumption.

I agree that there is a correlation between wealth and liberalism. And I think there is a causative factor for liberal thinking: the more one rejects one's traditional roots for the purpose of coexisting with others in a heterogeneous society, the more liberal one will be.For instance, Bill Clinton rejected his rural roots when he got to Georgetown. Likewise, intellectual Blacks hate their race, Vatican 2 Catholics learn to be ashamed of their faith, and Jews attempt to downplay their ethno-cultural roots and may even change their names. So those two conditions, if met, can make a liberal. So your point that the wealthy states tend to promote more liberalism is valid: pluralism makes more liberals.

I'm not quite sure you've proven the point that we're getting more free time. Sure, skipping the commute cuts down on an hour and a half of "work" (ie, not personal) time, but in a few years, who's NOT going to be connected to a BlackBerry or an iPhone? I think our free time is less free than you're giving it credit for.

You're biased because even if you weren't employed, you'd still be coding in your head. The difference between you and most other people is that you love your work, and consider it a hobby that happens to pay you.

It seems to me that most people go to college to get a better job. If that is the case, why not emphasize the two-year junior college? I feel that I learn more in less time by taking classes at the two -year college than a university. I will give an example. I took several classes in business and photography. I took the 1st two classes in black and white photography at the university. This course began with the history and critiquing of Depression era photographs and a collection of Ansel Adams Photos. It took half a quarter to finally get into the actual hands-on process of developing photos in a darkroom. The lab was not very good for learning techniques. The instructor really didn't know what she was doing. Now, I took the same class at a two-year college and immediately, the first day we went into the lab and started to develop and process films and prints. By the end of the quarter, we could do special processing techniques, infra-red processing, slide processing, Etc. We also got the whys and hows of the whole photography world. Color photography built on what we learned in the first course. By the way, we also got the critiquing and appreciation part of the university course in the same class and we got better in our techniques. So, an university education isn't really useful if you really want to learn how to do something useful. I seriously doubt that a medical doctor really has to spend all that time just to learn medicine. A lot of other countries can produce a doctors in less time, and put out more of them.
